Journalists and Lawyers for Freedom of Expression (JAM e.V.) has joined calls for urgent protection measures for Egyptian journalist and human rights defender Basma Mostafa, following a statement issued by the Coalition Against Transnational Repression in Germany.

The coalition warned that Mostafa continues to face serious threats connected to transnational repression, including intimidation, surveillance, and direct threats against her and her family. The statement highlights that Ahmed Abdelkader, who physically assaulted Mostafa in 2022, was able to re-enter Germany without preventive restrictions despite the documented risks. Basma Statement

According to the coalition, the case raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of Germany’s protection mechanisms for individuals targeted by transnational repression. The coalition notes that the threats against Mostafa have included coordinated harassment campaigns, publication of her home address, and threats of violence and kidnapping. Basma Statement

The case has also drawn international attention. It has been documented by several UN Special Procedures and included in the UN Secretary-General’s reprisals report, underscoring the gravity of the situation. Basma Statement

JAM stresses that Germany must ensure the safety of journalists and human rights defenders who are targeted by foreign-state intimidation on its territory. The organization supports the coalition’s call for concrete measures, including preventive entry bans for perpetrators, notification protocols when known offenders enter the country, and accessible protection and safe housing for individuals at risk.

The Coalition Against Transnational Repression in Germany was founded in 2024 and brings together human rights and diaspora organizations working to address the growing problem of cross-border intimidation and harassment of activists living in Germany.
