We are excited to announce the release of our 2023 Annual Report. This report highlights the achievements and activities of Journalists and Lawyers for Freedom of Expression (JAM e.V.) over the past year.
In 2023, JAM e.V. significantly expanded its advocacy for freedom of expression and media rights. Throughout the year, we hosted events for exiled journalists and produced important reports on media capture in authoritarian regimes. Our efforts have amplified the voices of those who fight for freedom of the press in some of the most challenging environments.
We actively participated in international forums to highlight the challenges faced by journalists worldwide. Our presence at these forums underscored our commitment to advocating for the rights of journalists and promoting media freedom on a global scale.
One of our major focuses this year was supporting exiled journalists. We conducted a comprehensive survey of exiled Turkish journalists residing in Germany. The survey aimed to identify service gaps, understand the community’s needs, and design tailored support programs. This initiative allowed us to address key challenges such as financial concerns, job opportunities, housing, and psychological support. We also organized networking events and discussions to help exiled journalists navigate their new environments and continue their vital work.
Our publication efforts included a detailed report on media suppression in Russia and Turkey, produced in collaboration with the Mass Media Defence Centre (MMDC). This report delved into the authoritarian tactics used against the media, highlighting cases of judicial assaults on journalists. We also participated in the Exile Media Forum in Hamburg, engaging with journalists from various oppressive regimes, and sharing strategies on how to resist transnational repressions.
In our first year, we launched our official website (https://jam-ev.com/) and established social media accounts to enhance our digital presence and outreach. These platforms serve as dynamic resources, providing updates on our activities and connecting us with a broader audience.
Looking ahead, JAM e.V. aims to continue its mission of advocating for press freedom and supporting exiled journalists through collaborative projects and ongoing initiatives. We are working on a new publication focused on combating authoritarian propaganda and a documentary project that explores the media landscape in Russia, Belarus, and Turkey.
